I am an electrical communication engineering student.I use softwares like Xilinx ISE, Matlab and a few programming languages.I already have a desktop which runs on ubuntu and windows.However I wanted to buy a laptop as well.Which one should I buy.I was thinking of Sony, Thinkpad, Dell Latitude/inspiron, or a macbook.I have not narrowed down on any model as far as sony and the thinkpads are concerned..Please help me out.(although I am am having second thoughts about the macbook..As I stay in India, support for the mac is not very good,Ive heard)... My budget:Rs 55000(If its not a macbook)

macbook its like the ultimat machine u can dualboot windows and ubuntu if u would like .. plus they have anapp store so u can get alot of software by a click of a button

It's really hard ti choose. Do those programs use lots Of calculations? If so you will want a higher end CPU like an i5 or i7 because that will improve your experience a lot. However I also don't know your budget so I can't reccomend you any particular models.

yeah dont buy mac here...and dont boy sony viao they have hard disk problem very much..i think dell is the best they have strong consumer support...look up at Dell Inspiron...i am also gonna doing eng..you can easily get i5 processor at that price..go with dell inspiron 15R

In this range You can get good laptop
If looking for a mulitpurpose laptop that does, music, games, video and internet, this Sony VAIO VPC-EB42FX/BJ is for you, I used to own a old sony vaio,and it still works. these last long.
PROS:
Good keyboard Lots of USB ports Has Intel Wireless Display built in, to view laptop contents on your TV (requires a wireless adapter for the TV). Haven't tried this. VGA port to show screen on a larger monitor Not loaded with "bloatware": just a starter version of Norton Security and MS Office. Fairly light to carry around Does not seem to get hot Fan is very quiet; you can hardly hear it.

Is has: 1) 12 cellbattery 2) 500GB harddisk (7200 rpm) Most laptops come with hardisk with 5000rpm 3) Windows 7 Home premium 4) Wifi and other features that other laptops promise 5) Great support and no problem till now. 6) i3 processor
