Very old computer, the first mail order machine, that opperated on the uber fast Intel 8080, one of the first full self customzable PC's, did complex maths, and could read data tapes...

Since the Altair 8800 is an antique PC, the answer must be vacuum tubes.

Transistors replaced vacuum tubes and PCs became popular.
;-)
Look up computers in Wikipedia, find lots of info.
