Hi hi, you can take a picture without a memory card and you could see it for at least 2 seconds(with a notice that says memory card not inserted).
But after that the picture will not be saved, it will disappear. Sad
If there's an internal memory then it'll be kept.
But usually there's none for usual cameras like mine.

So you better find a memory card, fast! ><
Since it's a field trip you would probably need 4GB. 2GB is okay but from my experience I could only take pics for half of the day. Sad

If your camera has enough internal memory, it can save it. That memory card is available anywhere and cheap. Just buy a new one.

The photos will save in the camera's internal memory, but normally internal memory is very limited so you can only save a few photos on it.
To get them off the camera's memory, all you need to do is use the USB cord that came with the camera to transfer the photos to your computer.

Your Sony camera most likely has a small internal memory of maybe 16 mb when no memory card is inserted. This is only about 8-10 pictures. After this your camera will not hold any pictures. You will have to purchase a memory stick pro duo in order to hold anymore pictures. Fortunately you can find memory stick pro duos relatively cheap.

If you are shooting mostly photos you will probably be fine with a 2gb, although I would recommend 4gb. If you are shooting many videos I would suggest a 4gb card, maybe even 8 if shooting various videos exceeding 10 minutes in length. Also, make sure you transfer images to your computer often. It would be terrible to have over 2 months worth of photos deleted due to a memory card corruption.

When you put your memory card in the pix that are in the camera's memory stay right where they are until you move them to the memory card.  They will not disappear.

The pictures get saved in the camera's internal memory if it is enough. If not, it will be lost to oblivion.
