ok i'm 23 years old, very new to photography, though i had Nikon E8400 and used to take photos from time to time but i really need to get a DSLR camera. i'm not zero and i know things about photography and cameras and lenses so i need something not as great as semi-pro cameras but i am a bit low on budget so i think i need to get something that works for a couple of years. i watched and read many reviews about Canon 550D and Nikon D3100 and all the reviews talk about their videos and 1080p but i'm not that interested in video, so i need opinions about the quality of the photos taken by both cameras. most of reviews say that Nikon cameras do better in high ISO and photo quality. but these two cameras are very similar and have very minor differences. and one good point about Nikon D3100 is that it's a bit cheaper.

what do you think?

You are comparing apples and oranges.

The Nikon equivalent of the Canon 550D is the D5100

Here is how there sensors compare, head to head

The Nikon D3100 is closer to the Canon 500D

Here is how the two cameras compare in lab tests

the D3100 has a slight edge, but also has better low light performance. Either way, both a great cameras and will keep you going for years to come.

I would suggest the D3100 because it is $200 cheaper, and you can put that $200 towards accessories or another lens.

Now if you wanted to, you could wait and save a little more for the Nikon D5100 which has a much more powerful sensor than both the D3100 and 550D, the same sensor found in the Nikon D7000 ($1500)

Both Nikon and Canon make nice cameras. The best thing to do is visit your local camera shop (not electronics store), and hold and try both models. Only YOU will know which one feels the best in your hands. I chose Canon for its weight/ feel/ ergonomics/ menu system and a fellow photog chose Nikon for the same reasons.

Lots of folks, like David for example, are into lab tests.  Me, I'm into results.  I shoot a 500D and it's an excellent camera.  Because I only recommend what I own and therefore know, I recommend only Canon dslr gear.

David is a friend and I respect his opinion.  He'll only buy Nikon and so that's what he recommends.

Good luck
