Ok first, please don't take me for a crazy person. I am a high school student at a college preparatory school and pride myself in always thinking with logic and basing my assumptions on sound evidence and facts.
Alright so, I think someone visits my house and watches in my room through my window at night. I believe this happens both when I am asleep and when I am awake. My room is the only bedroom downstairs, and the rest of my family sleeps upstairs. I am also closest to our side gate into our backyard, which I am actually 5 feet from.
So at night, on a lot of nights, it seems to be pretty random, but at least once every 2 weeks (and that is the bare minimum) I hear our side gate open and shudder as it closes. It makes a very distinct sound, and whatever is causing it does so very quietly so only I can hear it because of my room's location. I not only hear the gate open, but also sometimes hear the gravel outside my room being stepped on as if someone was walking slowly, and trying to be quiet.
I had a ladder next to my window up until today, which would cause someone trying to look in through the window have to move around it, causing more noise. I moved it, and tonight it was quieter, possibly because I moved the ladder.
It is also as if I can SENSE someone is there in my yard. This sounds crazy, but it is true, just really hard to explain. Imagine you where hiding just around a corner, and someone else hides around the other side of the corner. They are so close, you can sometimes just know they are there.
My dog also freaks out when this happens. He starts growling.
I also hear whatever it is leaving through the gate.
Please, help. It scares the sh!t out of me, but not so much anymore. I still get a good fright though. How can I tell what is happening? I suppose I could get a video camera, but I don't have enough money. And if I wait outside it will see me and leave (theoretically, because it wouldn't want to get caught.

Okay that is RIDICULOUSLY creepy. I suggest calling the cops and having them stake out at your house. Or just tell your parents and switch rooms or something cause that is dangerous

I personally would put up dark blinds so they could never see in.  If you were very sure I would call the cops.  A motion light that came on with movement would help too, they are pretty cheap and you can set the detector at the height where a human would set it off but not an animal.

Damn. That's creepy as hell. If it always happens at the same time you should wait outside and watch around that time. If it's random then that won't work, obviously. But if you're so sure someone(or something?) is outside your window, I totally suggest switching rooms with someone in your house for a little? Maybe have one of your parents sleep in your room near you? Wake them up when this happens. Lock your windows. Fold the blinds down so they can't see in. Motion sensor is a good idea.

My first thought was "this person probably thinks they are correct, but there is another explanation," but after reading your details, it sounds pretty serious. The gravel sound after is what convinced me, otherwise it could have just been the wind. Perhaps it was a cat jumping over the gate and walking across the gravel? Or perhaps you are so scared that you are psychologically creating the sounds of gravel in your head because logically you know that's the next sound you would hear had someone walked through the gate, and you already convinced yourself that someone walked through the gate.

Personally, I couldn't tell you. If you already made sure it wasn't anyone living in the house, I would wait till I knew for 90% sure my mind wasn't playing tricks on me. Peoples minds can do weird things in high stress situations.

im sure its an animal .
a cat ? or raccoon ?
here is what i think :
a cat/raccoon jumps onto the gate door ( which makes it sound like its opening because of the force from the jump ) and then jumps off it ( causing the gate to sound like its closing ) and then walks ( which makes the sounds of gravel being stepped on ) .
i may be wrong .
it might be the wind blowing against the gate door causing it to move .
... and your mind thinking its someone opening the gate which makes you think someone is out there causing you to get paranoid and your mind starts imagining things .
... such as hearing the little rocks being stepped on and having the feeling that someone is out there when there actually isnt .
OR there actually is someone out there .
i suggest a motion detector light ? borrow a webcam ? a camera ?
im sure if you tell a friend they will let you borrow a camera .
hope this helped .
