I need advice on using Frontline on my German Shepherd dog. The instructions say to part the fur/ hair between the shoulders and apply the entire contents in one spot. When I do this, the medication wicks up her hair. I noticed a large oily spot on her pet bed yesterday, several hours after I applied the Frontline. How can such a medication work if so much of it appears to be wasted?

Did you part the fur so you could see her skin and apply it to the skin on her neck? that may be why, when i apply it i make sure it is applied to the neck and then it spreads.

You can't just dump the stuff on your dog you have to kind of rub it in there and have the skin kind of soak it in.

It soaks up just fine. You may want to part the fur and apply it directly to the skin. Then let the fur move to it's natural position and rub it for a moment. It works fine for our black and tan.

did you do it in between her shoulder blades or at the base of her neck? granted the animals i use it on are always much smaller, but you usually apply it higher up towards where the neck meets the back? try checking the other packages, see if all the directions read the same way. if size doesn't matter at all try moving up her neck a little and then also using the tip of the tube to swirl it in a space about the size of a quarter.it will still make a mess but since you smearing it on an area it will dry out a lot quicker.

hmm that is a bit weird , frontline works by travelin thru the oils in the skin n killing off any fleas, it worked almost instantly for me so just check in a day or so for fleas

if your dg continues to scratch this may not necessarily mean the fleas are alive as the dog would be scratching bites, not fleas

if it doesn't Work call the vet and ask when it's safe to treat again

The medication works by traveling from hair to hair and then settling in the hair follicle itself. The medication dosage is based on the amount needed to cover the animal's whole haircoat so I would think they allow for a little extra to be lost to tongues and rubbing. I usually drag the applicator down the back of my Collie so she has a line of medication rather than a puddle.  But even if they lick/rub some off it should work just fine.  I have been using Frontline for years and have never had a problem.

Suggestion - the next time you apply the Frontline - have someone help...I would suggest you stand over the dog and put her head first thru your legs...have someone hold the hairs apart at the GSD's shoulders - you may have to go further down the neck/back than the shoulders - say about three or four inches - but making sure the medication gets to the skin...both of my German Shepherds get their frontline about every six weeks and yes it does ""wick" up their hair...but only for about a day and i have never noticed an oily spot on any of our furniture...good luck...
